Whole Bean vs Ground Coffee

Café morère 1897 moulu

Whole bean coffee offers more aroma and keeps better, while ground coffee wins on convenience. The right choice depends above all on your pace of life and the pleasure you are looking for in the cup. Here is everything you need to know to decide.

Whole bean coffee: freshness and aromatic intensity

A coffee bean keeps its essential oils and aromas far longer than ground coffee. As long as it is not ground, it stays protected from oxidation and humidity. It is only at the moment of grinding, just before extraction, that coffee releases its full aromatic palette. That is why roasters and baristas almost always recommend whole beans to anyone who wants to enjoy specialty-coffee quality at home.

The other advantage of whole beans is control: you adjust the fineness of the grind to your brewing method, espresso, moka pot or filter, to extract exactly the notes you are looking for.

Ground coffee: simplicity and speed

Ground coffee remains the most practical everyday choice: no grinder needed, just pour and brew. It is a sensible option for occasional use or if you do not have a coffee grinder at home.

Its main limitation is storage. Once ground, coffee loses its aromas within a few days, especially if poorly stored. To enjoy it fully, it is best to buy small quantities and drink it quickly, kept in an airtight container away from light and humidity.

Our recommendation

For a coffee that reveals the full richness of its roast, whole beans remain the safest choice. That is why our coffees are roasted in small batches and offered as whole beans, to be ground at the time of brewing for a cup as close as possible to a barista’s.

Frequently asked questions

Is ground coffee lower in quality than whole bean coffee?

Not necessarily. Quality depends first on the original bean and the roast. However, ground coffee loses its aromas faster, which can give the impression of a lesser coffee if it is not drunk quickly.

How long does coffee keep?

As whole beans, as long as it is not ground and stays hermetically packed, away from air, light and humidity, coffee keeps for up to 12 months in its sealed bag. Once the bag is open, it keeps an optimal taste for 4 to 8 weeks in an airtight container. Once ground, it keeps in a sealed container, in the refrigerator or a cupboard, and is best enjoyed within one to two weeks.

Do you sell ground coffee?

Yes, on request only. And it costs no more: ground coffee is offered at the same price as whole bean coffee.

Do I need a special grinder for whole bean coffee?

A burr grinder, manual or electric, gives a more even grind than a simple blade grinder and lets you adjust the fineness to your chosen brewing method.
